Teen charged with killing four friends in crash seeks dismissal

Teen charged with killing four friends in crash seeks dismissal

A 17-year-old teenager appeared before a judge seeking dismissal of charges stemming from a fatal car crash that claimed the lives of four friends.

The incident occurred near Woodacre, California, when a Volkswagen Tiguan SUV veered off the road, struck a tree, and ignited. The fire killed four passengers: Olive Koren, 14; Sienna Katz, 15; Josalynn “Josy” Osborn, 15; and Ada Kepley, 15.

The driver, Elsa Laremont Stranczek, and a 14‑year‑old passenger, Marley Barclay, survived with serious injuries. Both initially asserted that an oncoming vehicle had swerved into their lane, a claim later dismissed after investigators found no evidence of another car.

Stranczek was charged with misdemeanor manslaughter, a statute applied when an unintentional death results from a misdemeanor or other low‑level unlawful act that directly caused the fatal outcome.

Victims’ families are divided. Some families demand a trial that could result in a year of juvenile detention, while others advocate for a diversion program that would focus on rehabilitation rather than incarceration.

During the hearing, Stranczek’s attorney argued that the case should be dropped due to alleged flaws in the investigation, citing the loss of police interview notes and missing audio recordings.

Sienna Katz 14636699 Chilling horror-movie type theory about what caused crash that killed four young girls On Friday April 18th we lost precious, beautiful Sienna Katz in a terrible car accident, along with some of her closest friends. Her family and friends are devastated. We have created this page on behalf of her mom, our good friend Peg Minicozzi. Sienna was a vibrant, smart, and caring fifteen-year-old sophomore at Archie Williams High School. She was a bright light in this world. Sienna was treasured by her mother, her father Rob Katz, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins who cannot imagine life without her. Sienna loved spending time with her family, her dog Daisy, and laughing, singing, and having sleepovers with her friends. We will all miss her beautiful smile, kind spirit, and loving presence in our lives. As Sienna's family struggles with this incomprehensible tragedy, we are hopeful that this fundraiser can help ease the burden of expenses as well as warm their hearts. The outpouring of support from the many different communities of people who knew and loved Sienna has been a source of comfort for her family. Thank you to all who have sent love and prayers during this time of devastating grief. We are grateful to be a part of this community as we come together to support all who have been affected by this horrific tragedy.

The presiding judge rejected the argument, stating there was no indication of bad faith or intentional destruction of evidence by the investigating officers.

Olive Koren’s grandparents expressed a desire for a thorough investigation and indicated that their granddaughter would have wanted the opportunity for diversion. In contrast, Josy Osborn’s parents opposed diversion, emphasizing the need for Stranczek to comprehend the seriousness of her actions.

Osborn’s father highlighted the irreversible loss suffered by the family, and Katz’s mother stressed that accountability is essential, questioning whether diversion is appropriate for a case involving four deaths.

Josy Osborn It is with a heavy heart we share the news that we lost Josy in a tragic car accident on April 18th. Josy was a sophomore at Archie Williams. She was so full of light and we?ll miss her dearly. This is every mother?s worst nightmare. Christie and her sister Dylynn, along with the rest of the family, will need time and space to heal. There will be funeral/memorial costs, and Christie will have to take some time off from work to focus on her healing. I know there will be a lot of GoFundMe out there. But any donations will help to get this single mom through the hardest challenge of her life. This is a huge devastation to the whole community! We will stay strong together, loving one another through this.

The court has scheduled a continuation of the hearing for August 10. If the judge denies diversion, the case will proceed to trial.
