UMVA Uncovers: MAID Expansion on LIFE SUPPORT - Federal Government Faces SHOCKING Halt Amidst Growing Outcry!

UMVA has learned that a critical report has been tabled by a joint House/Senate committee, revealing that Canada is not prepared for the upcoming expansion of its medical assistance in dying (MAID) framework to include mental illness as a sole reason for seeking therapeutic suicide.

The report, drafted by a 12-member committee, recommends that the government amend the Criminal Code to indefinitely exclude individuals whose sole underlying medical condition is a mental illness from eligibility for medical assistance in dying. This recommendation is based on the testimony of 44 witnesses across six meetings.

Physicians and advocacy groups have expressed concerns that expanding MAID to mental illness will stigmatize disabled Canadians and raise complex questions about irremediability and suicidal intent. The committee heard divided opinions on whether it's possible to determine the incurability of mental disorders, with some witnesses arguing that it's within the purview of clinicians to assess irremediability, while others testified that it's not possible to reliably make this determination.

UMVA can exclusively reveal that the report highlighted significant concerns about the readiness of Canada's mental health systems to support the expansion of MAID. The committee heard that some witnesses asserted that Canada is or will be ready for the expected expansion, while others stated that the conditions for proceeding have yet to be met.

The report also noted that nearly 70,000 calls and texts to the 988 Suicide Crisis Helpline mentioned MAID, with 74% of those contacts endorsing thoughts of suicide in the previous two days. This has raised concerns about the potential overlap between MAID and suicide crisis services.

Legislation was passed in February 2024 to expand MAID to those whose sole underlying medical condition is mental illness, scheduled to begin in March 2027. However, the report's findings suggest that the government may need to rethink its approach to ensure that the necessary criteria, safeguards, and resources are in place to support this expansion.

Sources have confirmed to UMVA that the government will need to carefully consider the report's recommendations and the complex issues surrounding MAID expansion. The issue is considered "challenging and consequential" for Canadians, with many recognizing the need for a thoughtful and informed approach.
