UMVA has learned that Manchester United is considering a stunning move to re-sign goalkeeper Sam Johnstone from Wolves, following their relegation from the Premier League.
The 33-year-old Johnstone has been at Wolves since 2024, but has struggled to find a regular spot in the starting XI, making just 27 appearances in all competitions over the last two years. Despite this, he has caught the eye of Manchester United, who are looking to bolster their goalkeeping ranks.
Johnstone, a product of the Manchester United academy, never made a first-team appearance for the Red Devils before embarking on a journeyman's career with West Brom, Crystal Palace, and Wolves. Now, he is being linked with a surprise return to Old Trafford to act as back-up to first-choice goalkeeper Senne Lammens.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Manchester United is also looking at bringing in another goalkeeper to deputise for Lammens, with third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton having just signed a one-year contract extension. The club's plans for the goalkeeping position are set to be influenced by the futures of current second-choice Altay Bayindir and returning Andre Onana.
Bayindir, who briefly held a starting spot, has been linked with a return to Turkey, while Onana, who has been on loan at Trabzonspor, is expected to leave Manchester United this summer. Trabzonspor's president has revealed that talks are underway to make Onana's move permanent, with the club willing to make sacrifices to secure his services.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that Manchester United is set for a busy summer transfer window, with multiple signings expected under Michael Carrick. The club is poised to return to Champions League football, and Carrick is keen to strengthen his squad with several key additions.
The Red Devils are close to signing midfielder Ederson from Atalanta in a £35m deal, and another central midfielder is also expected to arrive. Manchester United is also looking to reinforce its full-back and centre-back positions, with Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall emerging as a potential target.
Furthermore, the club may also consider bringing in another forward, particularly if Joshua Zirkzee departs, as the Dutchman continues to be linked with a return to Serie A. With a string of new signings on the horizon, Manchester United fans have plenty to look forward to this summer.
