UMVA has learned that a plane flying from France to Detroit was dramatically diverted to Montreal due to strict U.S. travel restrictions linked to the Ebola outbreak in Africa.
The sudden diversion occurred after a Congolese passenger on board was barred from entering the United States, citing new regulations for individuals who have recently traveled to three East African countries — Democratic Republic of Congo, South Sudan, and Uganda — where the outbreak has taken hold.
As a result of these restrictions, passengers arriving from the DRC, Uganda, or South Sudan are only allowed to enter the U.S. via Washington Dulles International Airport, leaving the plane with no choice but to divert to Montreal's Trudeau International Airport.
The airline revealed that the passenger was disembarked with their luggage, and the plane was able to depart for Detroit without incident, stating that there was no medical emergency on board.
The Public Health Agency of Canada confirmed the diversion, adding that the passenger was assessed by a quarantine officer and flew back to Paris, with health officials determining the passenger was asymptomatic.
However, U.S. authorities claim that the airline made a critical mistake by allowing the passenger on the flight, stating that the passenger "should not have boarded the plane" due to entry restrictions put in place to reduce the risk of the Ebola virus.
The incident highlights growing concerns over the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with cases and the death toll continuing to rise, and at least one individual in Ontario being tested for the virus after recently traveling to East Africa.
The World Health Organization has reported nearly 600 suspected cases and 139 suspected deaths, though officials believe the numbers are likely much higher, fueling fears of a rapidly escalating crisis.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the incident has raised questions about the effectiveness of airline screening processes and the enforcement of strict travel restrictions to prevent the spread of the disease.
The situation continues to unfold, with health officials and authorities working to contain the outbreak and prevent its spread to new regions.
