A decade ago, a congressional report bluntly labeled the United States Secret Service “an agency in crisis.” The unsettling truth is, little has changed. Despite the bravery displayed by agents during attempts on a former president’s life, the core issues remain stubbornly unresolved, and a reliance on sheer luck is a dangerous strategy.

An exhaustive, bipartisan investigation in 2015, documented in a 450-page report, meticulously reviewed over a hundred security failures. The problems identified then – systemic weaknesses in training, staffing, and accountability – continue to plague the agency today, creating a persistent vulnerability.

The Secret Service currently juggles two vastly different missions: protecting the president and investigating financial crimes. This fractured focus is a fundamental flaw. Splitting these responsibilities is no longer a suggestion, but a necessity for effective operation.

Surprisingly to many, the majority of Secret Service personnel are dedicated to combating financial crimes and safeguarding the nation’s currency. Internal surveys consistently reveal alarmingly low morale within the agency, fueled by chronic understaffing, overwhelming workloads, and inadequate training.

However, the most critical deficiency is a near-total lack of accountability. When failures occur – and they have – consequences are rarely, if ever, imposed. Instead, those involved are often rewarded, perpetuating a culture of complacency and undermining the seriousness of security breaches.

The agency’s financial crimes division should be rightfully returned to the Treasury Department, where it historically belonged. Simultaneously, the presidential protective detail must be fully integrated within the Department of Homeland Security, allowing for a singular, unwavering focus on protection.

Persistent staffing shortages are crippling the Secret Service. The countersniper team, for example, currently operates at just 73% of the required capacity, a deficit that directly impacts the agency’s ability to fulfill its core mission. This shortfall was tragically highlighted during a recent incident where a presidential candidate was shot.

Recruiting and retaining qualified agents has been a decade-long struggle. The lengthy onboarding process, coupled with high turnover rates, creates a perpetual cycle of understaffing and inexperience. This constant churn compromises the agency’s readiness and effectiveness.

The quality of training is equally concerning. While new recruits undergo initial training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, most agents receive a mere 30 minutes of ongoing training per year. This minimal investment in professional development is simply insufficient to maintain the skills and vigilance required for such a high-stakes role.

With upcoming events like the World Cup, visits from foreign leaders, the America 250 celebrations, and multiple election cycles on the horizon, the need for a highly trained and prepared Secret Service is more urgent than ever. Yet, political maneuvering has hampered efforts to bolster training resources.

The response to a recent shooting during a campaign rally was particularly revealing. The chaotic extraction of the candidate, coupled with inadequate security measures and insufficient screening, exposed deep-seated flaws in the agency’s protocols and preparedness. The lack of repercussions following this incident is deeply troubling.

Ten years of inaction demonstrate that incremental changes are not enough. A fundamental restructuring is required. The Secret Service must be streamlined, allowing it to dedicate all its resources and expertise to a single, vital objective: the protection of the president and other designated individuals.

Focus shapes reality. By separating the protective and financial crime functions, and returning the latter to the Treasury Department, the Secret Service can finally address its systemic weaknesses and fulfill its critical mission with the dedication and effectiveness the nation deserves.
