TRUMP SHAMED: Somalia Now the WORLD LEADER in Human Rights?!

TRUMP SHAMED: Somalia Now the WORLD LEADER in Human Rights?!

A startling contrast has emerged from the United Nations Human Rights Council (HRC). Ben Saul, the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights and counterterrorism, publicly criticized the counterterrorism efforts of one nation while simultaneously offering praise to another – a nation grappling with significant internal strife and ongoing terrorist threats.

This isn’t an isolated incident, but rather a symptom of a deeper, troubling pattern within the HRC. Evidence suggests a selective application of scrutiny, where Western democracies and one particular nation consistently face intense examination, while authoritarian regimes largely avoid similar levels of accountability.

The very structure of the HRC allows this imbalance to flourish. These rapporteurs, operating within a highly politicized environment, aren’t bound by any truly independent standard of evaluation. Their assessments are shaped by the prevailing political currents, raising serious questions about objectivity.

Ben Saul, UN Special Rapporteur, speaks at a press conference on human rights and counter-terrorism at the United Nations in Geneva.

Saul’s statements, dating back to March 2026, consistently portray U.S. and Israeli counterterrorism operations as the foremost threat to global human rights. In stark contrast, adversarial states or those experiencing internal collapse are often afforded a more lenient assessment.

A clear pattern emerges when examining Saul’s commentary on U.S. extraterritorial operations. Actions taken by Western nations are frequently labeled as “naked aggression,” while states positioned against the West are presented as models of restraint or even positive examples of practice.

This selective framing raises profound concerns about the HRC’s commitment to universal human rights. It suggests that political alignment, rather than genuine adherence to principles, may be the driving force behind these critical evaluations.
