iPhone 17e: They Didn't Think It Could Be THIS Good.

iPhone 17e: They Didn't Think It Could Be THIS Good.

Apple faced immense pressure to deliver a compelling budget iPhone. The “e” series, starting at $599, represents the most accessible entry point into the Apple ecosystem for many. But Apple’s past attempts at value-priced iPhones haven’t always hit the mark, leaving consumers wary.

Last year’s iPhone 16e was a misstep, priced $170 higher than the iPhone SE it replaced, yet burdened with limitations – a slower processor, a single camera, and a lack of features like MagSafe. Hopes were high that Apple had learned from this failure. The iPhone 17e arrives with a faster processor and MagSafe, but retains the basic camera. Could this be the budget smartphone Apple needed to create?

The iPhone 17e’s design echoes older models, essentially offering an iPhone 14 chassis. It’s a sleek and comfortable phone, but feels dated compared to recent iPhones with features like the Dynamic Island and thinner bezels. The familiar notch and 6.1-inch display with thicker bezels are a clear indication of its budget positioning.

Despite the familiar exterior, key improvements have been made. The iPhone 17e now boasts a USB-C port, replacing the older Lightning connector. More importantly, it includes the Action button, borrowed from the iPhone 15 Pro, offering customizable functionality beyond simply silencing the phone. A welcome addition is the availability of a Soft Pink color option, though its subtlety might disappoint those seeking a vibrant hue.

The 6.1-inch display delivers excellent image quality, boasting a sharp 460ppi pixel density and a wide P3 color gamut. Games, movies, and photos appear vibrant and detailed. The screen also demonstrates impressive durability, resisting scratches during testing and benefiting from Apple’s Ceramic Shield technology.

However, the display isn’t without its drawbacks. Compared to more expensive iPhones, the lack of ProMotion and an always-on display are noticeable omissions. The Dynamic Island is also absent, requiring a slight adjustment for users accustomed to its functionality. Outdoor visibility can also be somewhat diminished.

The camera remains a significant compromise. The iPhone 17e retains a single rear camera lens, lacking the ultrawide and telephoto lenses found on higher-end models. This limits versatility, particularly for landscape and zoomed-in shots. Portrait mode relies on software processing, which can sometimes produce imperfect results around complex edges.

Despite these limitations, the camera is still capable. It excels in well-lit conditions, capturing vibrant and detailed images. Smart HDR 5 effectively handles challenging lighting scenarios. For everyday photography, the iPhone 17e delivers acceptable results, though it won’t compete with the quality of more expensive iPhones.

Performance is surprisingly strong, thanks to the inclusion of a processor from the latest A19 generation and 8GB of RAM. While not the top-tier A19 Pro chip, the 17e handles demanding tasks with ease. Benchmarks reveal performance close to the standard iPhone 17, significantly exceeding the iPhone 16e.

Apple utilized “binned” versions of the A19 chip – processors that didn’t quite meet the standards for higher-end models – resulting in one fewer GPU core. However, this difference is barely noticeable in real-world use. The iPhone 17e offers a smooth and responsive experience, capable of handling most apps and games without issue.

Battery life is solid, but not exceptional. The 4,005mAh battery provides enough power for a full day of moderate use. While it outperforms the iPhone 16e, it falls short of the efficiency of the iPhone Air. Heavy users may need to top up the battery before the end of the day.

A significant upgrade is the inclusion of MagSafe wireless charging, a feature absent on the iPhone 16e. While the 17e supports a slower 15W charging speed compared to the 25W on higher-end models, the convenience of magnetic alignment outweighs the speed difference. It’s a sensible compromise that enhances the user experience.

Apple’s decision to double the base storage to 256GB is a game-changer. This eliminates the need for many users to upgrade to a higher storage tier, effectively representing a $100 price cut. The iPhone 17e now offers a compelling value proposition, especially for first-time smartphone buyers.

The iPhone 17e isn’t perfect. The camera is limited, the display lacks some premium features, and the design feels slightly dated. However, it represents a significant improvement over the iPhone 16e. Apple has addressed many of the previous shortcomings, delivering a well-rounded and affordable iPhone.

This phone is ideal for those upgrading from older iPhones like the 12 or 13, switching from Android, or purchasing their first smartphone. It offers a compelling combination of performance, design, and features at a reasonable price. It’s a testament to Apple finally understanding the needs of the budget smartphone market.
