STEPHEN LEWIS SILENCED: A LEGEND FALLS—CANADA MOURNS!

Stephen Lewis, a towering figure in Canadian politics and a relentless advocate for global justice, has died at the age of 88. His passing marks the end of an era, leaving a void felt deeply by those who knew him and the countless lives he touched across the African continent.

Lewis’s journey began in a politically charged household, the son of former NDP leader David Lewis. He honed his remarkable oratory skills early, captivating audiences as a debater at the University of Toronto, a talent that would define his future career.

Though he twice enrolled in law school, Lewis ultimately found his calling not in legal texts, but in the vibrant heart of Africa. A teaching assignment sparked a lifelong love affair with the continent, igniting a passion for its people and a commitment to its future.

Stephen Lewis, a former UN Special Envoy on HIV/AIDS in Africa, was among a panel of speakers at a news conference in Toronto in this undated file photo.

He rose through the ranks of Canadian politics, leading the Ontario NDP for eight years before serving as Canada’s ambassador to the United Nations under Brian Mulroney. Even after leaving the formal diplomatic stage, his dedication to international affairs never wavered.

Lewis continued to exert influence as a special advisor to the UN Secretary-General on African affairs, then as deputy director of UNICEF, and later as the UN Special Envoy for HIV/AIDS in Africa. He became a powerful voice, relentlessly drawing attention to the devastating impact of the AIDS epidemic.

Driven by a fierce urgency, Lewis co-founded the Stephen Lewis Foundation, channeling resources directly to grassroots organizations working on the front lines of the HIV/AIDS crisis. His approach was rooted in respect and a belief in the power of local communities.

The last eight years of his life were marked by a courageous battle with cancer, a struggle he faced with the same unwavering determination he brought to his life’s work. He remained committed to the pursuit of justice and dignity until the very end.

His legacy extends beyond his professional achievements, deeply woven into the fabric of his family. He is survived by his wife, Michele Landsberg, and their three children, including Avi Lewis, who just days ago was elected leader of the federal NDP.

Avi Lewis, in a poignant moment during his acceptance speech, revealed his father was keenly following the campaign from his hospital bed, receiving “an IV drip of campaign data.” It was a testament to Stephen Lewis’s enduring passion for democratic socialism and his unwavering belief in a better world.

The world has lost a voice of exceptional eloquence and integrity, a champion for the marginalized, and a tireless advocate for a more equitable future. His impact will resonate for generations to come.
