A political demonstration in Hernando County, Florida, took a shocking turn over the weekend, culminating in the arrest of the local Democratic Party chair. Brian Stewart, 63, now faces charges after allegedly striking a man with a bullhorn during a protest against current administration policies.
The incident unfolded at the intersection of Mariner and Cortez boulevards around 10:30 a.m. Saturday. Deputies responded to reports of an assault, discovering a man with a visible head injury – later identified as Thomas Michta, a disabled veteran – claiming he’d been hit by Stewart.
According to reports, a heated argument sparked between Stewart and Michta as Michta walked through the demonstration. The dispute quickly escalated, with Michta alleging Stewart intentionally struck him, leaving him in pain and with a noticeable lump forming on his head.
A witness corroborated the account, stating they observed a physical altercation during the protest. Crucially, video footage captured by the witness appeared to confirm Michta’s claims, showing Stewart using the bullhorn to strike the man and subsequently pushing him.
Deputies, after reviewing the video evidence, the witness statement, and statements made by Stewart himself, determined they had probable cause to believe Stewart acted intentionally, causing bodily harm. He was booked into the Hernando County Jail and later released.
The Florida Republican Party swiftly condemned the alleged actions, demanding Stewart’s removal from his leadership position. They characterized the incident as an act of violence and political intimidation, unacceptable within the state.
The Democratic Party, both at the state and local level, issued statements condemning violence in general. However, the Hernando County chapter offered a different perspective, claiming Stewart was provoked by an individual who threw a drink at him and directed obscenities towards other protesters.
The local chapter alleges the incident began as a response to this initial act of aggression, painting a picture of Stewart reacting to a hostile situation. Stewart is currently scheduled to appear in court on April 27th to address the charges against him.
The case has ignited a firestorm of debate, raising questions about the boundaries of protest, the use of force, and the responsibility of political leaders to maintain composure even in the face of provocation. The outcome of the court proceedings will undoubtedly have significant implications.
