PHILLY'S BRAINPOWER UNLEASHED: Future Tech REVEALED!

PHILLY'S BRAINPOWER UNLEASHED: Future Tech REVEALED!

Filipino ingenuity shone brightly this week as the Department of Science and Technology recognized groundbreaking inventions and innovations at the National Invention Contest and Exhibits (NICE) 2026. The event, held in Muntinlupa City, celebrated the dedication and creativity of researchers, inventors, and students across the nation.

The prestigious Tuklas Award, recognizing outstanding inventions, was split into government and privately-funded categories. A Multi-shell Neutron Spectrometer, developed by the NCR cluster, took the government prize, offering a simplified method for measuring neutron radiation crucial for hospitals and research facilities. Simultaneously, an herbal cream called Demolluscum, designed to combat the contagious skin infection molluscum contagiosum, claimed the privately-funded award.

Demolluscum represents a significant advancement in dermatological care, utilizing locally sourced plant extracts to provide a non-invasive and affordable alternative to traditional treatments like cryosurgery. This innovative cream offers a convenient solution for those seeking relief from this common skin condition.

Beyond medical breakthroughs, the Banghay Award for Industrial Design honored Delfin C. Cuevas Jr.’s Multi-grain Precision Seeder with Fertilizer Applicator. This manually operated tool promises to revolutionize agricultural practices by enabling precise seed planting and controlled fertilizer distribution, optimizing crop yields.

The Likha Award for Creative Research saw success in the government category with the Point-of-Care African Swine Fever Virus (ASFV) Detection System. This rapid diagnostic tool delivers reliable ASFV detection in under an hour, a critical advancement for controlling outbreaks and protecting the country’s swine industry.

The speed of the ASFV detection system is remarkable; utilizing DNA extraction and real-time PCR, it provides sample-to-result testing in less than 90 minutes. This efficiency is poised to transform field diagnostics and enable swift responses to potential outbreaks.

Student innovation also took center stage with the Sibol Award for Student Creative Research, claimed by the Visayas cluster’s I-Count. This Artificial Intelligence-powered optical chick counting device is designed to improve efficiency, accuracy, and biosecurity in poultry unloading operations.

I-Count’s AI capabilities allow for precise chick counting and mortality detection, offering a significant leap forward in poultry farm management and contributing to a more secure food supply. The device promises to streamline operations and minimize losses.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr. emphasized the NICE Presidential Awards as the highest national recognition for Filipino inventors, enshrined in Republic Act 7459. The biennial event serves as a vital platform to showcase Filipino innovation and acknowledge the tireless efforts of researchers and students.

The Department of Science and Technology is committed to supporting inventors through programs focused on patent assistance, technology promotion, and commercialization. These initiatives aim to connect innovators with industries, investors, and opportunities for global exposure, fostering a thriving ecosystem of innovation.

Secretary Solidum highlighted the importance of NICE and related initiatives in advancing Filipino innovations that strengthen industries, improve daily life, and create new opportunities for all Filipinos. The dedication to fostering ingenuity promises a brighter future powered by Filipino creativity.
