The Rio Grande Valley sector witnessed a dramatic incident on Thursday night when a semi-truck carrying approximately 80 illegal aliens failed to stop at a border patrol checkpoint.
The residents of Riviera, Texas, were advised to lock up their homes after the aliens scattered into the surrounding brush, sparking a massive search operation.
According to officials, the truck was stopped at the Javier Vega, Jr. Border Patrol checkpoint near Sarita, Texas, on the morning of July 10, 2026.
A primary agent noticed the driver's nervous behavior during the initial immigration inspection, which led to the truck being directed to the x-ray area for scanning.
However, the tractor trailer managed to evade the scanning process and continued driving northbound, prompting an agent to conduct a traffic stop.
When the agent opened the trailer door, an estimated 50 subjects jumped off, pushing past the agent and a Kenedy County Sheriff's deputy.
Backup agents were deployed to the area, and a massive search operation ensued, with teams tracking down the fugitive aliens.
As of Saturday, at least 58 of the immigrants had been captured by law enforcement, with the total number of apprehended individuals currently at 45, consisting of nationals from Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Honduras, Colombia, China, Chile, and Ecuador.
A large-scale search operation was launched, involving Border Patrol agents, BORTAC, Border Patrol Search, Trauma and Rescue teams, local deputies, state troopers, and constables, who combed through the area using helicopters, railroad tracks, and thick brush.
Kleberg County Constable Precinct 3 Jesse Rivera stated that multiple agencies coordinated the search effort, which included moving the fugitive aliens further away from the community to avoid disturbing residents.
Residents of Riviera awoke to the sound of helicopters circling low over their homes as authorities searched for the immigrants, leaving many with a sense of unease and disruption to their daily lives.
