Meralco Assures No Disconnection for Customers with Ongoing Billing Disputes

Manila Electric Co. has clarified that customers with pending billing disputes will not face electricity service disconnections while their cases are under review. This assurance aims to address concerns over electricity bills that have been circulating on social media in recent weeks. The company has reiterated its commitment to resolving customer complaints in a fair and timely manner. This move is intended to provide relief to customers who are disputing their bills.

The Energy Regulatory Commission had earlier ordered the suspension of disconnection activities for unpaid bills covering the May to July billing periods. This suspension is meant to help mitigate the impact of higher electricity prices, which have been linked to the ongoing Middle East conflict. As a result, customers with unpaid balances for these periods will not face disconnections at this time. The commission's order is a temporary measure to ease the burden on consumers.

For customers whose electricity service has already been disconnected due to unresolved billing complaints, the Energy Regulatory Commission has outlined a procedure for reconnection. These customers need only deposit 10% of the disputed amount to have their electricity service restored while their cases are pending. This measure is designed to ensure that customers are not unfairly penalized while their complaints are being reviewed. The commission is working to resolve these cases as quickly as possible.

Manila Electric Co. is urging customers to submit their concerns through the company's official customer service channels. The company has assured customers that it is diligently reviewing and resolving every complaint brought to its attention. With over 8.2 million customers in Metro Manila and nearby provinces, the company is committed to providing reliable and efficient service to its customers. The company's customer service channels are available to address any questions or concerns customers may have.

The recent increase in electricity rates has also been a concern for customers. For July, the company raised electricity rates by P0.3428 per kilowatt-hour, bringing the overall residential rate to P14.8261 per kWh. This increase is mainly due to higher generation charges. The company is working to minimize the impact of these increases on its customers. The rate hike is a result of various factors, including changes in the energy market.
