Essential Items to Pack for a Weekend Road Trip, As Advised by Travel Expert Samantha Brown

Travel expert and host Samantha Brown has spent over 2.5 million miles and 26 years exploring more than 65 countries. Her most recent journey, a multi-year Route 66 road trip, added 2,448 miles to her total.

As Brown reflected on her experience, she emphasized the significance of Route 66. "The history of Route 66 is fascinating, and I met so many wonderful people. That's why it's called the Mother Road; it really is what gave birth to this nation's tenacity, spirit, and incredible optimism," she said.

With the 100th anniversary of Route 66 approaching on November 11, Brown shared some essential items to pack for a successful road trip. These items include a Frisbee or ball to encourage relaxation and physical activity during rest stops, snacks and water to avoid frequent gas station stops, and an emergency roadside kit with jumper cables, tire repair tools, and a flashlight.

Brown also emphasized the importance of comfortable clothing, suggesting that travelers pack items that can easily transition from sitting in a car to engaging in outdoor activities. Additionally, she recommended investing in a reusable water bottle, a portable charger, and a blanket or sweatshirt for unexpected temperature changes.

For entertainment and to combat boredom, Brown suggested packing games and activities such as a Frisbee or a ball, a reusable games activity book, and a seatback iPad holder. She also stressed the value of having a map or guidebook, particularly for navigating the historic sections of Route 66, which can be easily confused with interstates.

Some travelers may be more prone to travel nausea, and Brown suggested using anti-nausea bracelets or over-the-counter medications. She also recommended investing in an AAA membership, which offers roadside assistance and travel planning services.

Finally, Brown advised downloading maps, movies, games, music, and TV shows to devices before embarking on a road trip to ensure access to entertainment and directions even in areas with spotty cell service.
