A Saturday night meant to be filled with laughter and connection turned into a tragedy in Parks Township, Pennsylvania. Jessica Hilliard, a 34-year-old mother of three, lost her life intervening in a violent attack, forever altering the lives of those who loved her.
The chaos erupted shortly after 1 a.m. when a woman fled into Niki’s Quick Six bar, desperately seeking help from a man she claimed had assaulted her. That man, identified as 36-year-old David Dunmire, would soon be accused of a far more devastating act.
Witnesses say Hilliard, along with others, instinctively rushed outside to protect the woman. They attempted to de-escalate the situation, a selfless act that would tragically cost Hilliard her life.
Police allege Dunmire responded to the intervention by drawing a firearm and unleashing seven shots into the crowd as he attempted to escape. Hilliard was struck multiple times in the chest, succumbing to her injuries.
“Our sister died a hero,” shared Amanda Evacheck, Hilliard’s sister, her voice thick with grief. “She is the kind of person who would always jump in to help anybody, regardless of if she knew them or not. And she’s been like that her whole life.”
The senseless violence didn’t stop with Hilliard. Three other individuals – a 24-year-old woman, a 25-year-old man, and a 34-year-old man – also sustained gunshot wounds. Their conditions remain unknown, adding another layer of anguish to the unfolding tragedy.
Dunmire was apprehended at the scene and now faces a staggering 16 charges, including four counts of criminal homicide. The weight of those charges reflects the devastating scope of his alleged actions.
The community is left reeling, mourning the loss of a woman described as a beacon of kindness and courage. Jessica Hilliard’s final act, a desperate attempt to protect a stranger, serves as a heartbreaking testament to her unwavering spirit.
