Paul Scholes, a Manchester United icon, envisions a dramatic reshaping of the squad this summer. The legendary midfielder didn’t hesitate to deliver blunt assessments during a recent podcast, playing a revealing game of ‘Keep or Sell’ with former teammate Nicky Butt.
The upcoming transfer window is already anticipated to see departures, with Casemiro having announced his exit. Scholes’ evaluation goes far beyond that single change, identifying a significant number of players who, in his view, no longer fit the profile of a team aiming for Premier League and Champions League dominance.
The defense was a primary focus of Scholes’ scrutiny. While acknowledging Harry Maguire’s recent resurgence, he questioned whether the defender possesses the qualities needed to consistently compete at the highest level. He suggested a partnership with a truly world-class center-back – a Rio Ferdinand type – might change his mind, but ultimately leaned towards keeping Matthijs De Ligt instead, citing the younger player’s pace and overall ability.
Lisandro Martinez also faced a critical eye. Scholes admitted to previously praising Martinez, but now believes United needs a more physically imposing presence in the heart of the defense – a player who can dominate opponents and “get out of their way,” reminiscent of Jaap Stam or Rio Ferdinand. Despite this, he reluctantly suggested keeping Martinez.
Several other defenders were firmly placed in the ‘sell’ category. Leny Yoro, despite potential, was deemed not ready, while Noussair Mazraoui’s position within the tactical setup was unclear. Patrick Dorgu’s role also remained undefined, leading Scholes to believe he’d be best utilized elsewhere.
The midfield assessment was equally direct. Mason Mount, despite being a “great footballer,” doesn’t have a clear path to playing time ahead of Bruno Fernandes and doesn’t fit into other positions effectively. Manuel Ugarte was also identified as likely to be moved on, while Kobbie Mainoo earned a firm endorsement to remain a key part of the team.
Scholes emphasized the need for significant strengthening in defensive midfield, acknowledging Casemiro’s contributions but stating United requires a substantial upgrade in that area. Bruno Fernandes, however, received high praise, being described as a potential Player of the Year even within a struggling team.
Up front, Joshua Zirkzee was deemed expendable, while Scholes expressed a positive outlook on Matheus Cunha, Amad Diallo, Bryan Mbeumo, and Benjamin Sesko, indicating they should be retained as part of the future squad. His evaluations weren’t simply about current performance, but about building a team capable of consistently challenging for major honors.
Scholes’ candid assessment paints a picture of a club needing significant change. His perspective, forged through years of success at the highest level, offers a stark but potentially vital roadmap for Manchester United’s future.
