Filipino Fans Unite Behind Eala as She Makes History in Wimbledon Main Draw

On the prestigious grass courts of Wimbledon, Alexandra "Alex" Eala, seeded No. 29, is making history as the first Filipina player to ever compete in a Grand Slam main draw. With legions of Filipino fans in attendance, she has become a rockstar in the tennis world, and her presence at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club has been met with jubilation.

Eala's Round 1 victory over Mexico's Renata Zarazua, with a score of 6-1, 6-2, was a resounding win that left her fans cheering. As the first seeded Filipina player in any Grand Slam main draw, she has already experienced a level of adoration from her kababayans (countrymen) in cities around the world.

However, the magnitude of the support she received at Wimbledon is unprecedented. "I never would have thought that at Wimbledon I would have a home crowd," Eala said. "I really enjoyed it." With a massive following behind her, Eala will need every shout, clap, and cheer to propel her to her first-ever third-round appearance in any Slam.

In a highly anticipated rematch, Eala will face off against Australia's Maya Joint, who denied her a first pro title in the same country at the 2025 Eastbourne Open finals. Joint, 20, has already proven to be a formidable opponent, having beaten Eala in the past. A win for Eala could catapult her to the Round of 32 for the first time ever, a feat she has yet to achieve.

In addition to her singles match, Eala will also be competing in the doubles alongside Czechia's Nikola Bartunkova. The pair faces a tough challenge against the eighth-seeded pair of Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia and Sofia Kenin of USA. Despite the odds, Eala remains optimistic, drawing motivation from her Filipino fans and her impressive 9-3 grass season record.
