SKATE OR DIE: The Dark Underbelly of Skateboarding EXPOSED!

SKATE OR DIE: The Dark Underbelly of Skateboarding EXPOSED!

The path to realizing a dream often feels like navigating a personal hell, a relentless struggle that can strip away joy. But for artist Jappy Agoncillo, that very struggle became the inspiration for a vibrant and deeply personal solo exhibit.

“Inferno,” as he titled the show, isn’t a depiction of darkness and despair, but a colorful exploration of the journey *through* hardship. It features his original characters, Dante and Juan, traversing a hellscape infused with the energy and aesthetics of skateboarding culture – paintings, customized skateboards, even miniature ramps.

Agoncillo’s work suggests a powerful truth: hell isn’t a place to be feared, but a state to be understood and ultimately, overcome. It’s about finding peace within the struggle, and continuing forward even when the destination remains unclear.

His artistic journey began in 2016, fueled by the need to earn income while still a college student. Small commissions quickly grew into large-scale murals, transforming commercial spaces into canvases for his burgeoning talent.

Over the past decade, Agoncillo’s client list has become a testament to his skill, including major brands like Adidas, Playstation, and even the New York Giants. His murals have graced cities across the globe, from New York and Los Angeles to Melbourne and Mumbai.

In 2023, he secured an O1 work visa and relocated to New York City, now dividing his time between the energy of the American art scene and his roots in Manila. This move represented a significant step, a deliberate investment in his career.

Early on, Agoncillo approached art as a business, reinvesting earnings into better materials and expanding his capabilities. Now, with “Inferno,” the client is himself. He’s finally creating solely for his own artistic vision, a shift that feels profoundly liberating.

The exhibit’s vibrant aesthetic belies its deeper themes of struggle and identity. At the heart of “Inferno” is Dante, a wolf character Agoncillo created years ago as a form of street art and self-expression.

Initially a simple graffiti tag, Dante evolved to represent the artist’s sense of isolation and ambition. The “lone wolf” archetype resonated with a young Agoncillo, providing a visual embodiment of his independent spirit.

But skateboarding was his first true passion, a solitary pursuit that shaped his identity. Discovering it as a child, he found solace and freedom in a world where no one else seemed to tread.

Skateboarding wasn’t just a sport; it was a culture – a vibrant blend of art, music, and lifestyle that captivated him completely. Even now, when facing creative roadblocks, he turns to skate videos and video games for inspiration, tapping into a wellspring of nostalgia and sparking new ideas.

“Inferno” reflects this deep connection, incorporating painted skate ramps, customized boards, and even miniature Tech Deck fingerboards. It’s a tribute to the culture that shaped him, a way to keep its spirit alive.

Agoncillo acknowledges that his journey is ongoing, a continuous cycle of setting and chasing new goals. He admits he’s “always moving the goalposts for where heaven is,” embracing the inherent uncertainty of the creative life.

He draws a parallel to Dante Alighieri’s “Inferno,” suggesting that even the most arduous journeys can be enjoyed if you believe in the possibility of a rewarding outcome. It’s about finding optimism in the struggle, and embracing the pursuit of your dreams, relentlessly, to the very end.

“Inferno” is currently on view at Space Encounters Gallery, offering a compelling glimpse into the mind of an artist who has transformed personal struggle into a vibrant and thought-provoking work of art.
