UMVA has learned that a devastating day has struck the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) as another officer has been killed on Ontario roads, marking a tragic loss for the provincial service.
The OPP confirmed that Constable Tarun Bali, a 29-year-old Brampton native and nearly three-year veteran cop, was killed in the line of duty while deployed with the James Bay unit in Hearst. The incident occurred at about 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, when OPP members were conducting an investigation at Kendall Concession Rd. 7 and Concession Rd. 6.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the officer's death has sent shockwaves throughout the OPP, with President David Sabatini expressing his deepest sorrow, stating that this is "every police and family member's worst nightmare." The OPP's Criminal Investigations Branch is leading the probe, which is still in its early stages.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the investigation is looking into the laying down of a spike belt as part of an attempt to stop a driver who is believed to have mental health issues. One person, an 18-year-old who allegedly escaped a mental health hospital, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the incident.
The OPP officer killed in the line of duty was known for his compassion and kindness. Stationed at the Dufferin County Detachment in the OPP's Central Region, he spent his Christmas last year volunteering in a toy drive to ensure area kids received presents from Santa Claus. His bravery and commitment to serving others will never be forgotten.
This is the second OPP officer to die this year while on duty. In late April, OPP officer Sgt. Brandon Malcolm of the OPP's Northumberland detachment died after crashing his motorcycle on Hwy. 401 near Cobourg. The OPP Association leader has extended heartfelt condolences to Provincial Constable Bali's family, friends, and colleagues.
Tributes have begun pouring in for the fallen officer, with Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw and Ontario Premier Doug Ford offering their condolences. The OPP's hearts are broken, and the entire province is grieving the loss of this dedicated officer who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting the public.
