On June 24, The Peninsula Manila opened a new exhibit in its lobby that chronicles the hotel’s five‑decade history.
The display traces key moments from the hotel’s incorporation in 1974, its opening in 1976, and subsequent renovations, while also noting visits by public figures and the hotel’s role during political upheavals.
Highlights include the installation of a waterfall in 1996, the addition of a Napoleon Abueva sunburst sculpture, and the rebranding from Manila Peninsula to The Peninsula Manila in 1992.
The exhibit draws on the hotel’s own archives, which have been preserved and curated to illustrate both celebratory and challenging periods in its past.
The Peninsula Manila launched during a wave of luxury hotel development in the mid‑1970s, coinciding with international conferences held under the Marcos administration.
At that time several comparable properties opened, but only The Peninsula Manila remains largely unchanged in its core identity.
The hotel’s Director of Brand Communications attributes the stability to continuous ownership by Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited.
He notes that the hotel has avoided wholesale reinvention, opting for measured renovations that preserve its lobby, grand staircases, and traditional afternoon‑tea service.
The property has become embedded in Manila’s social fabric, hosting weddings, birthdays, concerts, and multigenerational visits.
The director highlighted the hotel’s response to national crises, providing shelter during the 1989 coup attempt, supporting relief after natural disasters, and maintaining staff employment during the pandemic.
He emphasized that such contributions have shaped public perception of the hotel as more than a commercial enterprise, reinforcing its reputation and legacy.
The anniversary year will feature a series of cultural and community programs, including an art exhibit, a weekend brunch, an afternoon‑tea event, and a series of charitable initiatives.
The season will conclude with a Christmas concert scheduled for late November, bringing together guests and community members.
