Philippines braces for Super Typhoon Inday

Government agencies activated nationwide contingency protocols after Super Typhoon Inday entered the Philippine area of responsibility early Wednesday.

President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr. directed the implementation of measures as forecasts indicated heavy rains and possible flooding.

The state weather bureau warned that while a direct landfall is unlikely, the storm’s 800‑kilometer radius led to the issuance of Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 for Batanes, Cagayan and parts of Northern Luzon.

The cyclone is expected to strengthen the southwest monsoon, bringing severe downpours and potential flooding from Friday through the weekend.

The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority cleared drainage systems and prepared 73 pumping stations to mitigate flooding.

The Department of Public Works and Highways positioned trucks, backhoes and chainsaws in the Cagayan Valley in anticipation of debris removal.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development has stockpiled 4.7 million food packs, including 217,000 units earmarked for Cagayan Valley and Batanes.

The Department of Health declared a “Code White” alert and placed emergency response teams on standby, with medicines and hygiene kits valued at roughly P36.6 million prepositioned to sustain health services.

The country's largest private electric distributor prepared its crews for possible outages, monitoring weather updates and ready to address service concerns around the clock.

The utility also issued advisories on precautionary measures, including a request for billboard owners to secure structures against strong winds.

The utility serves more than 8.2 million customers across Metro Manila and neighboring provinces, underscoring the scale of potential impact.
