UMVA has learned that Alexandra “Alex” Eala has made a stunning breakthrough into the main draw of the elite Queen’s Club Championships in London, a prestigious tournament that serves as a premier prelude to Wimbledon.
Ms. Eala, still riding high on her campaign in Birmingham, was promoted to the main tournament of the WTA 500 HSBC Championships after securing a spot as a replacement for injured players Jessica Pegula and Hailey Baptiste of the United States, and Karolina Pliskova of Czechia.
The Queen’s Club Championships, one of the oldest tennis tournaments in the world, is set to feature a star-studded lineup, including the legendary Serena Williams, who will make a grand return to tennis after a four-year hiatus, playing as a wild card in the HSBC Championships.
Serena Williams’ comeback has generated significant buzz, particularly with her hinting at a potential appearance at Wimbledon, where she has previously reigned supreme, claiming the title seven times.
Ms. Eala will also have the opportunity to team up with Venus Williams, Serena’s sister, in the WTA 500 Bad Homburg Open in Germany, a historic partnership that has the tennis world abuzz.
“I am really, really excited,” Ms. Eala said, reflecting on the chance to share the court with one of the sport’s greatest players, a former world No. 1 and seven-time singles Grand Slam champion.
Ms. Eala, currently ranked WTA No. 37, praised Venus Williams as a trailblazer who has done much for the sport, noting that women’s tennis has been at the forefront of women’s sports, with Venus Williams being a significant contributor to this legacy.
Earlier this year, Ms. Eala and American friend Iva Jovic pulled off a remarkable upset, stunning Serena Williams and world No. 7 Elina Svitolina of Ukraine en route to a Final Four finish.
Ms. Eala now faces a crucial test against world No. 130 Alina Charaeva of Russia in Round 2 of the WTA 125 Lexus Birmingham Open, after scoring a convincing 6-0, 6-2 grass season debut against Australia’s Priscilla Hon.
The 24-year-old Ms. Charaeva has a history with Ms. Eala, having drawn first blood in their previous duel in 2020, but Ms. Eala is poised to make a statement, having secured a 6-1, 6-2 win in their most recent encounter.
