Cape Verde Football Captain Faces Sexual Assault Allegation Involving Team Translator

Cape Verde Football Captain Faces Sexual Assault Allegation Involving Team Translator

The captain of Cape Verde's World Cup team is under investigation for allegedly sexually assaulting a team translator during a trip to New Zealand in March. The accused, a 36-year-old man, allegedly attacked a Brazilian woman who was hired to work as a translator for the team. The woman reported the incident to authorities, providing detailed information about the alleged assault. She also submitted photos showing bruising on her neck as evidence.

According to the woman's statement, she was invited to a hotel room for what she thought was a team meeting, but realized it was a social gathering and left. The accused allegedly followed her to her room, forced his way in, and assaulted her. The woman sought treatment at a clinic for survivors of sexual violence and underwent a forensic exam, which found bruises on her neck, breasts, lips, and genital area. The clinic's findings were documented and handed over to the authorities.

The investigation is ongoing, with police collecting security camera footage from the hotel and awaiting the results of a forensic investigation. The accused has not publicly responded to the allegations. The incident occurred during Cape Verde's World Cup campaign, which has seen the team break records to become the smallest nation to reach the knockout rounds. The team will face defending champion Argentina in a round-of-32 matchup.

The woman reported the incident to the Cape Verdean Football Federation and FIFA, providing them with a medical report and evidence of the alleged rape. However, she did not receive a response from either organization. The Cape Verde Football Association declined to comment, while a FIFA spokesperson stated that the organization is in contact with the New Zealand authorities and takes misconduct allegations seriously. The investigation is ongoing, and FIFA has declined to comment further at this stage.

Cape Verde's World Cup run has been a notable achievement, with the team finishing undefeated in the group stage and advancing to the knockout rounds. The team's success has been overshadowed by the allegations against the captain, which have raised concerns about the handling of misconduct cases in international sports. The incident has also highlighted the importance of supporting survivors of sexual violence and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable.
