A 20-year-old man is now facing serious charges after a terrifying attack on the San Francisco home of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. Federal agents descended on a residence in Spring, Texas, Monday morning, executing a search warrant and gathering evidence related to the alleged crime.
The suspect, identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama, is accused of traveling over a thousand miles from Texas with a chilling intent: to harm Altman. Investigators believe Moreno-Gama’s actions were fueled by deep-seated opposition to artificial intelligence, a conviction that escalated into a violent act.
Early Friday morning, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at Altman’s house, igniting the front gate. Fortunately, no one was injured in the blaze. The attack wasn’t isolated; Moreno-Gama then proceeded to OpenAI headquarters, where surveillance footage captured him hurling a chair at the building’s glass doors.
According to authorities, Moreno-Gama openly declared his intention to burn down the headquarters and inflict harm on anyone inside. He was apprehended outside the building, found carrying a jug of kerosene and a lighter – tools intended to carry out his destructive plan.
A disturbing manifesto was discovered in Moreno-Gama’s possession. Described as a “three-part series,” the document contained a list of names and addresses belonging to other AI executives and investors, raising concerns about potential further targets.
The Justice Department is preparing to file federal charges, including attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives, and possession of an unregistered firearm. These charges add to the multiple state felonies already filed against Moreno-Gama, including attempted murder.
Altman responded to the attack with a deeply personal message, sharing a photograph of his family. He expressed his overwhelming love for them and hoped the image would deter future acts of violence, regardless of anyone’s feelings towards him.
The situation escalated over the weekend with a separate incident near Altman’s home involving reports of gunfire. Police swiftly arrested two individuals in connection with the shooting, recovering dangerous weapons.
San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew emphasized the department’s commitment to aggressively pursuing gun-related crimes. He praised the officers’ quick response in apprehending the suspects and removing the weapons from the streets.
While initial reports suggested a connection between the two incidents, OpenAI representatives clarified that the weekend’s gunfire was unrelated to the attack on Altman’s home and did not appear to be targeted towards him.
