Manhattan prosecutors have signaled they may challenge a federal plea agreement for Luigi Mangione if it threatens to delay the state murder trial over the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
A newly unsealed letter from the District Attorney’s office states that authorities are aware of a potential guilty plea in Mangione’s separate federal case before the New York trial begins.
Prosecutors warned that, should a plea interfere with the state prosecution, they could request that the federal judge take this into account before approving the deal.
The filing follows a June hearing where the federal judge postponed Mangione’s trial to January 2027, allowing the New York case to move forward first.
Mangione, 28, has pleaded not guilty in both the state and federal proceedings stemming from the December 2024 shooting of Thompson, who was killed outside a Manhattan hotel on his way to a conference.
The assistant district attorney wrote that a federal plea should not compromise a fair outcome in the state case and that the victim’s family’s opposition should be considered.
This is the clearest indication that prosecutors are prepared to oppose any agreement that could keep the high‑profile murder case from reaching a jury.
The district attorney’s office has already communicated its position to federal prosecutors and to Mangione’s defense team.
Prosecutors emphasized the seriousness of the offenses, the loss of an innocent life, the impact on Thompson’s family, and New York’s interest in pursuing the homicide.
Earlier in June, discussions about a possible plea deal surfaced, but no agreement was reached, and the defense team criticized the prosecutors for allegedly prejudicing the defendant.
The judge delayed Mangione’s federal trial because it was impractical for his attorneys to prepare for two high‑profile trials simultaneously, keeping the state trial scheduled for September 8.
Federal jury selection will now take place in January 2027, with opening statements set for late January and jury questionnaires to be completed in December.
Prosecutors argued that New York should have priority, as Mangione was extradited there for the state case before later being transferred into federal custody.
They also claim Mangione fled the city and was arrested five days later at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.
