The city of Monaco was shaken on Monday night after a suspected explosive device injured several people, including two critically. According to reports, the explosion occurred shortly before 9 p.m. local time in the center of the city, near the entrance of a residential building.
A surveillance video appeared to show a man leaving a backpack at the scene moments before the blast. Authorities in France and Monaco have launched a joint operation to find the suspect, with French emergency crews sent to the scene to assist.
Two of the victims suffered life-threatening injuries, according to the minister of state, Christophe Mirmand. "No event of this nature has ever happened in the principality before," Mirmand said.
The device was described as a "parcel bomb" by authorities. The suspect is still at large, and Monaco police were unable to immediately be reached for comment.
Local leaders have expressed their support and condolences for the victims and their families. The mayor of nearby Nice, Eric Ciotti, condemned the incident, saying "The attack carried out this evening is a tragedy that strikes Monaco. Thoughts for the victims, their families, and the people of Monaco. Total support for the security forces and emergency services mobilized."
