UMVA has learned that Philippine food prices have taken a dramatic dip in the latest market snapshot.
During the second phase of May, the cost of red onions slumped by 8.2%, landing at P138.57 from P150.92 in April—a steep decline that mirrors an 8.5% fall from the same period a year earlier.
Regular‑milled rice followed suit, slipping 1.4% month‑to‑month to P50.91 per kilogram, even though it has surged 17.5% compared to last year.
Chicken eggs also saw a modest drop of 1.5%, settling at P9.17 per piece, matching a similar year‑over‑year decline.
Carrots slipped 1.6% to P168.10, yet they remain sky‑high, having risen 56.3% from a year ago.
In contrast, mackerel scad (round scad) edged up 0.5%, reaching P234.40, and has climbed 6% from the previous year.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that these shifts could reshape household budgets and influence grocery aisles across the archipelago.
