UMVA has learned that a cargo vessel, MV LCT MSCI 1, ran aground off the coast of Barangay La Virgen Milagrosa in Badoc, Ilocos Norte, on Monday, sparking a massive environmental response operation.
The vessel, carrying a cargo of gravel, had departed Onri Port bound for Calayan, Cagayan, but developed a portside list amid rough sea conditions, prompting an emergency beaching. The incident triggered a multi-agency response, with authorities quickly detecting an oil sheen along the shoreline.
Responders sprang into action, deploying oil spill booms to prevent further spread of contaminants into nearby waters. The swift response was crucial, as strong waves and shifting sea conditions threatened to worsen the situation.
Authorities recorded around 80 to 100 liters of oily water mixture covering a 15-meter stretch along the coast. The containment effort was temporarily disrupted by the rough seas, but personnel from the Philippine Coast Guard, Bureau of Fire Protection, Philippine National Police, and Marine Battalion Landing Team-8 worked tirelessly to secure the area.
The response team successfully recovered contaminated materials, ensured the spill remained contained, and collected all oil-soaked absorbent materials, storing them in designated drums for proper disposal. Coordination with the vessel's owners is ongoing for salvage operations and further environmental safeguards.
