Toronto is preparing for a surge in demand on its emergency medical services as the city gears up to host FIFA World Cup games this summer. A proposal before city council seeks to bolster paramedic resources by drawing support from neighboring regions, anticipating a significant strain on the existing system.
The request for additional medics originated from organizers of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, who specifically asked for a heightened emergency presence at BMO Field during the six scheduled matches. These games fall within a period identified as “10 high-demand event days” spanning from June 11th to July 2nd.
The plan focuses on strategically positioning paramedics from Peel, York, and Durham regions along Toronto’s municipal borders. This “integrated regional paramedic response model” aims to ensure uninterrupted emergency coverage within a two-kilometer radius of the city limits.
City officials predict an influx of over 230,000 additional visitors each day during the tournament. This massive increase in population is expected to overwhelm not only the medical emergency response system but also the city’s transportation networks.
The subcommittee has already approved the regional paramedic response model, paving the way for a full council vote as early as May 20th. The initiative is designed to proactively address potential medical emergencies and maintain a high level of care for both players and spectators.
The estimated cost of bringing in these supplementary paramedics is $800,000, a figure already allocated within the city’s $7.9 million World Cup paramedic budget. This demonstrates a commitment to prioritizing public safety during the international event.
BMO Field will be comprehensively staffed with medical personnel, with plans to deploy between 40 and 50 medics on each match day. This extensive coverage will extend to both the players on the field and the fans in the stands.
Beyond the stadium, dedicated paramedic resources will also be stationed at the FIFA Fan Fest locations at Fort York and The Bentway, ensuring medical support is readily available throughout the city’s official fan zones.
