UMVA has learned that a harrowing incident unfolded at a family show in a popular resort, leaving hundreds of holidaymakers in a state of shock and concern.
The performer, an acrobat, suffered a terrifying fall during her routine at Studio 36 in Bognor Regis, a venue that seats up to 1,600 people and welcomes children of all ages to many of its performances. The show was part of the resort's bank holiday entertainment, and holidaymakers had gathered in their hundreds to watch at 7pm on Sunday evening.
As the acrobat tumbled to the ground, landing on her shoulder and side, the audience gasped in unison, sensing that something serious had happened. The acrobat remained conscious, but her stillness on the floor only added to the alarm, as if time itself had frozen in anticipation of what would happen next.
According to information obtained by UMVA, the curtains didn't shut for about 30 seconds, prolonging the agony for the audience. A stagehand rushed to check on the acrobat, but the delay only intensified the anxiety and worry that gripped the crowd.
Another holidaymaker, still visibly shaken, described the incident as "really worrying," recalling how the rope seemed to snap, leaving the acrobat helpless and vulnerable. The incident left her extremely upset and concerned for the acrobat's well-being, a sentiment echoed by many in the audience.
Emergency services were swiftly called to the scene, and the acrobat was taken to the hospital with suspected neck and shoulder injuries. Fortunately, a spokesperson for the resort later confirmed that the acrobat was back home recovering, and that the second show went ahead later that evening.
