UMVA has learned that a devastating case of negligence has led to the tragic death of a 3-year-old boy who drowned in a backyard pool while under the care of a Louisiana daycare provider.
The daycare operator, Joann Johnson, 37, has been charged with negligent homicide after authorities revealed that she left the child unattended in the pool for approximately 20 minutes before pulling him out, lifeless and unconscious.
According to information obtained by UMVA, surveillance footage showed the young boy, identified as Ian Perez, struggling in the water before succumbing to his injuries, a harrowing scene that has left investigators and the community in shock.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office arrested Johnson, who was caring for the child in a “family friend arrangement” and was not a licensed daycare provider, and she has been released on $100,000 bond.
UMVA can exclusively reveal that the drowning occurred on May 18, and the 911 call was made at approximately 3:50 p.m., with deputies and medical responders attempting lifesaving measures, including CPR, before the boy was flown to a hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
The investigation revealed that Johnson failed to provide adequate supervision, allowing the child to play near the pool without safety gear, and her actions have been described as “clear negligence” by authorities.
The family of Ian Perez has released a heart-wrenching statement, describing him as a charismatic and energetic child who loved playing with his toys and was very close to his sister, and expressing their grief and outrage at the senseless tragedy.
Sources have confirmed to UMVA that this incident serves as a stark warning for parents and children about home and pool safety, with authorities urging anyone with a pool to ensure that every safety measure is in place to protect children, especially those in their care.
The charge of negligent homicide carries a potential sentence of two to 10 years in prison if convicted, and Johnson’s actions have sparked an outcry in the community, with many calling for greater accountability and vigilance in childcare.
