BLOODLINES & BETRAYAL: Family Secrets EXPLODE!

The opening of Rajo Laurel’s third store at SM Aura felt less like a retail launch and more like a vibrant family gathering. Laughter mingled with conversation as nieces, nephews, and longtime friends moved through the space, creating an atmosphere of genuine warmth and connection.

This new location debuted Laurel’s Spring/Summer 2026 collection, “Child’s Play,” a line born from a desire to recapture a simpler time. The designer sought to bottle the fearless joy and unburdened happiness of childhood, a potent antidote to the world’s current anxieties.

Bold prints dominate the collection, drawing inspiration from the charming home of designer Nina Tolstrup. Gingham and seersucker establish a distinctly summery mood, with a particular emphasis on classic shirtdresses in cheerful blue and green checks – reminiscent of beloved picnic blankets. For men, these fabrics are paired with unexpectedly sheer materials, creating a modern and intriguing contrast.

The collection also features a playful duality, showcasing both demure and daring pieces. Black or red slip dresses are layered under sheer, matching shifts, offering customers the freedom to mix and match, and create their own unique looks.

Laurel’s commitment to inclusivity shines through in the collection’s sizing. Rejecting the trend of designing solely for ultra-slim figures, many pieces are offered in free sizes, acknowledging that beauty comes in all forms. “We have to be inclusive,” he stated, “Not everybody is Kate Moss.”

This philosophy extends to his design process, informed by the real bodies of his sisters – women with curves and character. Laurel embraces and celebrates these realities, believing fashion should be accessible and flattering to everyone. He himself acknowledges being a “big person,” further solidifying his dedication to representing a wider range of body types.

He believes this inclusivity is key to resonating with a broader audience. Exclusive fashion, he argues, limits its impact. The demand for accessible, well-made clothing is growing, and Laurel sees a significant opportunity for Filipino designers to fill that void in the ready-to-wear market.

The shift from bespoke design to ready-to-wear presents a unique creative challenge. While bespoke work is a deeply personal dialogue with a single client, ready-to-wear allows for a broader interpretation. Laurel delights in the idea that a garment can take on a new life and meaning when worn by someone else.

Beyond the domestic expansion, Laurel is also exploring international opportunities. A recent partnership with Thailand’s Creative Economy Agency, facilitated by the Philippine Creative Industries Development Council, has generated significant momentum. He hinted at promising discussions with investors, anticipating potential developments later this year, cautiously optimistic about the future.
