Khan DEMANDS Labour REJOIN EU – Now or NEVER!

London Mayor Sadiq Khan has issued a bold challenge to his party, urging Labour to commit to rejoining the European Union in its next election manifesto. This isn't a subtle shift in position; it's a decisive call for a complete reversal of Brexit, fueled by a growing conviction that leaving the EU has inflicted significant and lasting damage on the British economy.

Khan argues that the economic consequences of Brexit over the past six years have been devastating, and he believes the time for incremental adjustments is over. He envisions a future where a vote for Labour is a vote to return to the EU, framing it not as a distant possibility, but as an “inevitable” outcome. Remarkably, he suggests this monumental step could be taken without the need for another divisive national referendum.

This intervention arrives alongside growing sentiment within Labour’s upper ranks. Chancellor Rachel Reeves recently highlighted a closer relationship with the EU as a key opportunity for economic growth, emphasizing the importance of partnerships with European neighbors. Her comments signaled a clear recognition that Britain’s prosperity is inextricably linked to its continental counterparts.

However, Labour’s official stance remains cautious. Despite acknowledging the economic harm caused by Brexit, the party has previously ruled out rejoining the customs union, single market, or allowing freedom of movement – positions considered “red lines” to avoid reopening old wounds. Yet, even within those constraints, voices like Shadow Justice Secretary David Lammy have conceded that the economic damage is “self-evident” and that policy could evolve.

A key factor driving Khan’s urgency stems from a belief that London has been disproportionately affected by Brexit, potentially losing 10% of its projected economic growth. This localized impact, combined with a shifting global landscape, has led him to question the reliability of alternative partnerships, particularly with the United States.

Khan’s thinking has been sharpened by the unpredictable nature of international relations. He points to the actions of former President Donald Trump – from trade wars to geopolitical instability – as evidence that the US cannot be considered a dependable ally. This realization has fueled his argument for a more secure and collaborative relationship with Europe.

He illustrates his point with a compelling analogy: being a member of a tennis club and paying dues, only to have a non-member freely use the facilities. Why, he asks, should the UK continue to pay for access without having a voice in the rules? It’s a powerful metaphor for the perceived unfairness of the current arrangement.

Beyond the economic arguments, Khan has also forcefully condemned recent inflammatory rhetoric targeting British Muslims. He expressed heartbreak and anger over comments made by a Conservative frontbencher who characterized Muslim prayers in Trafalgar Square as an “act of domination.” He sharply criticized the Conservative leader’s defense of those comments, arguing that true British values are rooted in respect and inclusivity.

Khan’s outspokenness on both Brexit and social justice issues underscores a pivotal moment for the Labour party. He is not simply advocating for a policy change; he is framing a vision for a more prosperous, stable, and inclusive future – one where Britain once again embraces its European identity.
