San Miguel's SHOCKING Coal Grab: Power Play or Disaster?!

San Miguel's SHOCKING Coal Grab: Power Play or Disaster?!

A significant shift in the Philippine energy landscape is underway as San Miguel Corporation, one of the nation’s largest power producers, is actively exploring potential coal mining areas recently offered by the government.

Representatives from San Miguel Global Power Corp. and its subsidiary, Sual Power, Inc., signaled their intent by attending a crucial pre-submission conference hosted by the Department of Energy. This move indicates a serious consideration of expanding their existing coal resources.

Sual Power currently operates a massive 1,200-megawatt coal-fired power plant in Pangasinan, a vital component of the Luzon grid, having reliably supplied power for over two decades since 1999.

Beyond Sual, San Miguel’s power portfolio already includes the 600-MW Mariveles plant in Bataan and the substantial 1,000-MW+ Masinloc plant in Zambales, solidifying its position as a key player in the country’s energy sector.

The Department of Energy’s offering encompasses three pre-determined areas spanning approximately 18,000 hectares and containing 18 distinct coal blocks. These areas are strategically located across Semirara Island, Isabela, and Cagayan provinces.

Notably, the auction includes coal blocks currently under the operational control of Semirara Mining and Power Corp., the Philippines’ leading coal producer, adding a layer of complexity and competition to the bidding process.

Semirara Mining and Power Corp. itself is actively seeking to maintain its mining rights on Semirara Island, and has even garnered interest from Meralco PowerGen Corp. for a potential partnership in the auction.

The deadline for submitting applications is rapidly approaching on April 28th, coinciding with the opening of bids, setting the stage for a decisive moment in the future of Philippine coal mining.

Energy Undersecretary Alessandro Sales emphasized the importance of responsible resource development, urging prospective bidders to prioritize technical expertise, financial strength, and a commitment to safety, environmental stewardship, and community well-being.

The government’s aim is to balance immediate energy security with a long-term vision for a sustainable and evolving power sector, ensuring that resource development benefits both the nation and its communities.
