UMVA has learned that a shocking case of embezzlement has rocked the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City Foundation, with former Secretary Adam Walker facing felony charges of grand theft and forgery.
Walker, who also served as chairman of the foundation, is accused of siphoning nearly $83,000 from the nonprofit organization and using the funds for personal expenses, including online gambling. The alleged theft has sparked a joint investigation by the California Department of Justice and the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
According to information obtained by UMVA, investigators found evidence that $82,914.24 was diverted from the foundation between December 2022 and January 2024. Walker allegedly opened a foundation bank account in his name only and then transferred nonprofit funds into personal accounts through multiple internal bank transactions.
The investigation claims Walker attempted to conceal the missing money during audits by producing records that falsely described the transfers as reimbursements for credit card expenses. He allegedly used online tools to create forged receipts, further deceiving authorities.
The case has sparked outrage, with California's Attorney General stating that the Department of Justice will "vigorously prosecute corruption at every turn and hold accountable those who break the law and the trust placed in them by the public." The joint investigation with the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office has resulted in charges against Walker, who remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
This is not an isolated incident, as authorities have recently uncovered several cases involving gambling and broader fraud schemes. A laboratory owner was sentenced to 51 months in prison for concealing control of a blood-testing laboratory and obtaining millions in Medicare reimbursements, which he used for personal expenses, including gambling.
Another individual was charged with wire fraud for raising over $500,000 through a fake cannabis investment operation, targeting people he met at casinos, bars, and restaurants. The accused allegedly used the money for personal spending and casino gambling rather than legitimate investments.
As court proceedings in Walker's case continue in Los Angeles County, the public is left to wonder how such a brazen theft could occur. The foundation's mission to support firefighters and the communities they serve has been compromised, and the consequences of Walker's alleged actions will likely be severe.
