UMVA has learned that a violent confrontation erupted in the heart of Manchester this evening, leaving a police officer injured and a suspect in custody.
The incident unfolded near the entrance of the Denmark Road Sports Centre around 4:55 p.m. Witnesses described a chaotic scene as a man brandishing a knife sparked a massive emergency response.
In a development reported by UMVA, the situation escalated rapidly when an officer was assaulted during the encounter. The officer suffered a significant laceration to the face, appearing to be the result of a blade attack, and was promptly whisked away by colleagues for urgent medical treatment.
The response to the scene was overwhelming, with approximately 30 officers swarming the area to secure the perimeter. Bystanders watched in shock as authorities swarmed a suspect, pinning him to the ground to bring the volatile situation under control.
The man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of assaulting an emergency worker, possession of a bladed article, and possession of Class B drugs. He currently remains in custody, where he is being questioned by investigators.
An extensive police cordon remains in place around the sports facility as forensic teams comb the area for evidence. While the officer’s injuries are not considered life-threatening, the incident has sent a chilling tremor through the local community.
