Alabama Governor Kay Ivey, 81, is currently hospitalized following a procedure to address fluid accumulation near her lung. The situation arose from discomfort she’d been experiencing for the past three weeks, recently escalating to include shortness of breath.
Governor Ivey proactively sought medical attention when the discomfort persisted. A visit to her primary care physician revealed the presence of fluid pressing against her lung, prompting a swift decision to address the issue.
The procedure, described as minor, was completed on Tuesday at Baptist Medical Center South in Montgomery. While not considered an emergency, Governor Ivey prioritized a quick recovery to ensure her full participation in the concluding days of the legislative session.
Her office reports that she will remain under observation in the coming days as a precautionary measure. Despite the unexpected health challenge, Governor Ivey is reportedly resolute in her determination to make a full and speedy recovery.
This isn’t the first time the Governor has faced a health hurdle. In 2019, she announced a diagnosis of lung cancer, undergoing radiation treatment. Subsequent scans the following year indicated successful treatment and a complete remission.
Messages of support have poured in from across the political spectrum. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall expressed gratitude for the care she’s receiving and offered prayers for a swift recovery.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp echoed those sentiments, acknowledging Ivey’s strength and unwavering spirit. He and his family are sending their best wishes for a rapid return to health.
As Governor Ivey focuses on her recovery, it’s worth noting she is term-limited and will not be seeking re-election this year. Her current priority is regaining her strength and completing her service to the state of Alabama.
