A major emergency operation was launched at Fistral Beach in Newquay after two people were pulled from the water.
Emergency services attended and a cordon was put in place, which has since been removed. The deaths are not being treated as suspicious.
Fistral Beach is known as one of the most popular surfing destinations in the UK. The beach regularly attracts thousands of visitors during the summer months.
Sadly, a man and a woman were pronounced deceased at the scene. Their families have been informed, and our thoughts are with them at this extremely difficult time.
A file will be prepared for HM Coroner. Eyewitnesses reported seeing police drag two people out of the water by the rocks at Fistral Beach.
Details of the eyewitness account include officers performing CPR on the individuals and calling for help. A paramedic and multiple emergency vehicles arrived at the scene within a short period of time.
Coastguard boats and a helicopter also responded to the incident, with personnel being lowered onto the rocks to assist. The road was cordoned off by police as a large crowd gathered.
