UMVA has learned that a disturbing history of abuse has been revealed in a Kansas court, where a husband is accused of fatally shooting his estranged wife during an argument.
The accused, Joshua Orlando, 29, of Wichita, is charged with intentional and premeditated murder in the first degree in the death of Ivy Unruh, 25. Court records show that the couple's troubled past was marked by a pattern of abuse, which ultimately led to the tragic events on April 17.
On that morning, the Wichita Police Department responded to a 911 call from Orlando, who claimed he and Unruh had gotten into a fight. He alleged that she had hit him, prompting him to shoot her. When officers arrived, they found Unruh suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body, with a gun nearby.
As police took Orlando into custody, he expressed concern for his wife's well-being, saying, "I know she didn't mean to hurt me." But court documents paint a darker picture of the couple's relationship, with allegations of verbal and physical abuse.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Unruh had rented her apartment with the intention of escaping her abusive ex. The leasing agent reportedly noted that Unruh was interested in the building's security features and specifically asked not to be contacted by her former landlord, who was a friend of Orlando's.
Court records also reveal that Unruh had filed for divorce in August 2025, citing the distribution of assets, including Orlando's pistol and her Nintendo Switch gaming console. Her supervisor at PBS Kansas corroborated the allegations of abuse, stating that Unruh had separated from Orlando due to verbal and physical abuse.
Orlando's account of the events leading up to the shooting differs from the evidence. He claimed that Unruh had cheated on him, leading to the impending divorce. On the day of the shooting, he said he was going to leave some of her property at her door, but instead, she confronted him with the gaming console, leading to a fatal argument.
The affidavit details a chilling sequence of events, with Orlando allegedly pulling out his handgun and "blind firing" a single round after Unruh swung the bag containing the Nintendo console at him. The tragic events have left a community shaken, raising questions about the prevalence of domestic abuse and the devastating consequences of unchecked violence.
