UMVA has learned that a shocking incident involving former England striker Darren Bent and ex-Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has shed light on a dramatic collapse in trust and communication that quickly derailed Bent's promising spell at Villa Park.
Bent revealed how he was brutally stripped of the club captaincy just weeks after being appointed, a move that left him reeling and marked a turning point in his Aston Villa career. The ex-Premier League forward described the incident as a "dressing room humiliation" that exposed a deep rift between him and Lambert.
According to information obtained by UMVA, Lambert initially placed significant trust in Bent after arriving at Aston Villa in 2012, even seeking his insights into the squad and younger players during the off-season. Bent recalled how Lambert would ask him about the personal lives of his teammates, including the cars they drove and whether they were getting above their station.
But everything changed with the arrival of Christian Benteke, who would go on to become Villa's first-choice striker. Bent had been rested for a midweek League Cup win over Manchester City and expected to return to the starting XI, only to be left out without warning. Lambert's decision to drop him was communicated in a shocking manner, with the manager simply flipping the whiteboard chart and walking out of the dressing room.
