PUB OWNER'S NUCLEAR DECISION: Kids BANNED! Parents, You're Next?

PUB OWNER'S NUCLEAR DECISION: Kids BANNED! Parents, You're Next?

For years, the Kenton Arms in London operated with a 5 p.m. curfew for children, a remnant of when the pub still served food. But a growing problem wasn’t the time, it was the lack of parental supervision, leading landlord Egil Johansen to make a bold decision.

This weekend, the Kenton became an establishment exclusively for those 18 and over. It wasn’t a move against children themselves, Johansen explained, but a response to increasingly irresponsible behavior from parents within his pub.

Johansen, who has managed the Kenton since 2009, recounted instances of children running unsupervised, creating dangerous situations. One particularly alarming incident involved a child falling onto a manager in the cellar while parents were seated far away, and then the parents blaming the staff.

The core issue, he stressed, was a disregard for responsibility. Parents would allow children to roam freely while they socialized, creating a chaotic and potentially hazardous environment for everyone. Staff attempts to politely intervene were often met with hostility and a sense of entitlement.

Licensing objectives require pub owners to ensure the safety of patrons, including children. But Johansen found himself in a position where preventing harm meant addressing the actions – or inaction – of parents. The pub wasn’t designed to be a free-range childcare facility.

The reaction to the new policy has been overwhelmingly positive, even from regular customers who previously brought their children. Locals have expressed relief at the prospect of a more relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere.

Interestingly, Johansen has noticed an increase in earlier visitors, patrons who previously avoided the Kenton during peak family hours. Other pub owners are now reaching out, seeking advice on implementing similar policies, acknowledging they face the same challenges.

While Johansen acknowledges the policy inconveniences some families, he maintains it was a necessary step. He emphasized that many families were respectful of the pub’s environment, but a blanket policy was the only fair solution.

The Kenton’s story isn’t about excluding families, but about defining clear expectations and prioritizing safety. It’s a reminder that enjoying a public space requires a shared sense of responsibility, from both the establishment and its patrons.

The change has already fostered a more comfortable environment, and Johansen hopes it will serve as a catalyst for similar conversations within the hospitality industry.
