UMVA has learned that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent faced a grueling interrogation from Democrat lawmakers on Capitol Hill during a House Ways and Means Committee hearing on Wednesday, where oversight of the Treasury Department took center stage.
The hearing quickly turned into a heated debate, with Democrats fixated on President Trump's tariffs, the economy, and wage growth. However, their fervor seemed curiously absent when it came to addressing the economic hardships inflicted by previous policies.
Bessent remained unfazed by the Democrats' aggressive line of questioning, refusing to engage with their rhetoric. One notable exchange occurred with Democrat Rep. Suzan DelBene, who attempted to pin down Bessent on issues related to USAID, but her efforts backfired.
DelBene claimed that a staffer had sent a file containing USAID information, but Bessent swiftly corrected her, pointing out that he was not in charge of USAID. The exchange revealed a clear case of confusion and miscommunication.
"Why are you bringing up USAID with me? Why? What does that have to do with me? USAID, I do NOT oversee," Bessent said firmly, highlighting the limits of his authority.
DelBene pressed on, asking if Bessent was not in charge of the Treasury, but he remained resolute, reiterating that the information in question was sourced from USAID, not the Treasury.
The tense exchange showcased Bessent's unwavering composure under fire, as he skillfully deflected the Democrats' attempts to land a hit.
