ROUTER WAR: Netgear & Adtran DEFY FCC Blacklist!

ROUTER WAR: Netgear & Adtran DEFY FCC Blacklist!

A significant shift has occurred in the recent government restrictions on router sales. The initial ban, intended to safeguard national security, is now showing cracks with key exemptions granted to major manufacturers.

Netgear announced a conditional approval from the Federal Communications Commission, a development confirmed in an official FCC update. This marks the first substantial break in the policy that threatened to halt the introduction of new router technology to the American market.

Earlier this year, the FCC implemented a sweeping rule effectively prohibiting the import of new consumer routers. The concern centered on potential security vulnerabilities and unacceptable risks to both national security and individual citizens.

The ban initially appeared absolute, leaving experts to speculate that only domestically produced routers, like those used by Starlink, might avoid the restrictions. The implications were stark: without FCC approval, new routers couldn’t be legally sold, and even firmware updates faced limitations.

Now, the FCC has expanded the list of approved devices. Netgear’s extensive lineup – including Nighthawk, Orbi, cable gateways, and modems – has been exempted, with the approval lasting until October 1, 2027. This includes a wide range of series like R, RAX, RBK, and more.

Adtran Inc. also received a favorable ruling, with its Service Delivery Gateways, specifically the SDG-9000 Wi-Fi 7 routers designed for homes and small businesses, also cleared for sale until the same 2027 deadline.

The decision regarding Netgear is particularly intriguing. Historically, the company has relied on overseas manufacturing, primarily utilizing contract manufacturers in Taiwan. The reason for this exception remains unclear, as Netgear previously declined to comment on the matter.

Netgear itself stated its alignment with the FCC’s vision for a more secure digital landscape, emphasizing its U.S. origins and headquarters. This suggests a potential shift in how the FCC evaluates companies based on their overall commitment to security, rather than solely on manufacturing location.
