A church leader has been convicted of abusing four vulnerable young men over a period of more than 40 years. John Grant, 77, was found guilty of carrying out 11 sexual attacks between 1970 and 2012.
Grant, a moderator and preacher at the London Baptist Association, was convicted of three counts of sexual assault, six counts of indecent assault, and two counts of causing another person to engage in non-penetrative sexual activity. He was remanded in custody ahead of sentencing on September 11.
Met Police investigators believe there may be many more victims due to the nature of Grant's offending and his lengthy association with the church across the UK. He held senior positions at several churches, including Muswell Hill Baptist Church, and had links to various youth groups in north London.
The abuse typically involved Grant grooming vulnerable young men through coercive control and behavior before sexually assaulting them. Police first became aware of Grant's offending in 2023 after a victim came forward, detailing repeated sexual assaults over a 30-year period.
Detectives launched extensive inquiries to identify organizations, youth groups, and churches connected to Grant, leading to the identification of further victims. The investigation revealed a similar motive behind Grant's actions, involving the exploitation of vulnerable young men through his church association.
Police are now appealing for further victims to come forward. Detective Constable Liam Levy, who led the investigation, praised the courage and bravery of the victim-survivors who came forward, stating that their accounts were crucial in identifying the scale of Grant's offending.
The Met Police are committed to investigating rape and sexual offenses, even if they occurred many years ago. Victim-survivors who come forward can expect to be treated with dignity, compassion, and sensitivity throughout the process.
