LAPTOP RIP-OFF: They're Making Your Tech OBSOLETE!

LAPTOP RIP-OFF: They're Making Your Tech OBSOLETE!

A disturbing trend has taken hold in the laptop world: as prices soar, essential ports are vanishing. It’s a frustrating reality I’ve observed throughout my time reviewing machines, witnessing budget-friendly models generously equipped while premium laptops become increasingly isolated.

The omission of practical connections feels fundamentally wrong. Why would someone investing a significant sum in a high-end laptop be forced to rely on dongles and adapters for basic functionality like connecting an HDMI cable or even headphones? Yet, this is becoming the norm.

Consider the Dell 16 Premium, a $3,199 machine lacking both HDMI and USB-A ports. Contrast that with the Acer Aspire Go 15, a remarkably capable $499 laptop that includes both. The disparity is stark and speaks to a troubling shift in priorities.

The Lenovo Yoga Slim 9i 14, priced at $1,899, exemplifies this issue – it doesn’t even include a headphone jack. Just two USB-C ports are all you get. Meanwhile, business-focused laptops, like the HP EliteBook 6 G1q with 5G, often prioritize connectivity, packing in Ethernet and HDMI despite their compact designs.

Manufacturers seem fixated on aesthetics and thinness, sacrificing practicality in the pursuit of sleek designs. It’s a clear divergence: budget laptops are built for usability, while high-end models prioritize form over function. The dream of a completely port-free laptop, fueled by wireless charging, feels increasingly within reach for some designers – a prospect that’s deeply unsettling.

Ironically, manufacturers actively *market* port selection on business laptops, touting the convenience of avoiding dongles. “A big upgrade for workers,” they claim. But they are simultaneously creating the problem by stripping ports from their consumer-grade premium offerings.

It’s a peculiar cycle: a budget laptop offers ample connectivity, a premium laptop charges extra for its absence, and a business laptop demands a premium to restore what should be standard. This is the current, baffling landscape.

The narrative that Apple is driving this trend is inaccurate. MacBooks consistently offer more ports than comparable Windows “luxury” laptops. Every MacBook still includes an audio jack, while some Lenovo models, like the Yoga Slim 9i 14, have abandoned it entirely.

While Apple has moved away from USB-A, MacBook Pro models retain HDMI ports and SDXC card slots. It’s a PC manufacturer willing to sell a $3,199 machine without an HDMI port, and to deem an audio jack unnecessary. Even Apple recognizes the value of the traditional 3.5mm connection.

The obsession with thinness mirrors the earlier craze for minimal bezels. While a sleek design is appealing, it shouldn’t come at the expense of essential functionality. The focus has shifted from what a laptop *does* to how it *looks*.

A beautifully designed laptop feels impressive initially, but the frustration sets in when you realize you need a hub just to connect basic peripherals. It’s a sacrifice of usability for the sake of aesthetics, prioritizing appearance over practical needs.

When purchasing a laptop, scrutinize the port selection. Prioritize models with HDMI, an SD card slot, and potentially Ethernet. Extra USB-C ports are also valuable, especially if the laptop charges via USB-C. Consider a port layout that offers convenience on both sides of the device.

Port availability is a critical factor in any laptop review, and it heavily influences the overall assessment. Sadly, a well-connected laptop is increasingly more likely to be found in the budget category than among premium offerings. If you value connectivity, a “budget” laptop might be the true luxury.
