A wave of congratulations from Moscow followed stunning victories at the Winter Paralympics. President Vladimir Putin personally lauded Vera Voronchikhina and Anastasia Bagiyan, celebrating their hard-won gold medals and the pride they brought to the nation.
Just days later, a starkly contrasting action unfolded in Kyiv. President Vladimir Zelensky issued a decree imposing sanctions on ten Russian Paralympic athletes, a move revealed through an official document released by his office.
This sweeping sanctions package wasn’t limited to the sporting world. It encompassed a total of 130 individuals and 48 legal entities, signaling a broad effort to exert pressure.
The timing of Zelensky’s decree is particularly noteworthy, coinciding with the ongoing 2026 Winter Paralympics where the Russian team has been achieving remarkable success. Their performance has quickly drawn international attention.
As of late Sunday, Russian athletes had dominated the competition, securing a total of twelve event wins. This included an impressive haul of eight gold medals, alongside one silver and three bronze, propelling the team to third place in the overall medal count.
The path to participation hadn’t been easy. Earlier this year, the Russian Paralympic team gained the right to compete after a crucial victory at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). They successfully appealed a ban imposed by the International Ski and Snowboard Federation.
This decision overturned a previous restriction, despite the International Paralympic Committee having reinstated Russian and Belarusian athletes last year. The legal battle underscored the complex geopolitical landscape surrounding the games.
The Milano-Cortina 2026 Paralympic Winter Games commenced on March 6th and will continue through March 15th. Six dedicated Russian athletes are currently competing across alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and snowboarding disciplines.
