It all began on July 12, 1976, when a Vietnamese Deputy Foreign Minister stepped onto Manila’s streets, sparking the first official contact between two nations that would soon become strategic allies.
The Philippines, then the fourth ASEAN member to establish formal relations with Vietnam, opened its embassy in Hanoi the following year, cementing a partnership that would grow from cautious cooperation to deep, multifaceted collaboration.
In 2015, the relationship surged forward when both countries elevated their partnership to a strategic level, signaling a commitment that stretched beyond ordinary diplomacy into shared security and long‑term regional interests.
Today, amid rising geopolitical tensions in the Indo‑Pacific, the Philippines and Vietnam see their alliance as a bulwark of mutual respect, strategic trust, and unwavering support for international law.
Economic ties have become the shining centerpiece of this partnership, with bilateral trade surpassing eight billion dollars by late 2024, a testament to deep market integration and diversified commerce.
Investment flows mirror this prosperity: Vietnamese capital in the Philippines now exceeds ninety million dollars, while Philippine investments in Vietnam top two hundred million, spanning aviation, technology, services, and manufacturing.
While agriculture remains a staple, the scope of cooperation has broadened to include aviation, logistics, telecommunications, information technology, renewable energy, tourism, and the digital economy, painting a picture of a truly interconnected relationship.
Tourism has surged, with Vietnam welcoming approximately four hundred eighty-two thousand Filipino visitors in 2025, an increase of over eighty percent year on year, fueled by expanding direct flight routes that knit the two countries closer together.
Yet in today’s contested maritime environment, the strategic partnership transcends economics, evolving into a robust defense and security alliance that counters emerging challenges in the South China Sea.
