UMVA has learned that Marxist commentator and Twitch streamer Hasan Piker unleashed a fiery tirade against New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill during a live broadcast on Sunday, accusing the Democratic leader of bolstering the Trump administration’s immigration agenda.
Sherrill had recently defended the deployment of state police around protests outside Delaney Hall, an ICE detention center in Newark, insisting she would not allow unrest to become a pretext for expanded federal immigration operations.
“I refuse to let that happen in New Jersey. I will not give ICE a pretext,” the governor declared in a news segment that Piker was reacting to.
Piker seized on the statement, mocking the governor’s logic: “Yeah, I won’t give ICE a pretext, so I’ll make sure they don’t have to do anything because I’ll do it myself. That’s basically what the meta is here for this blue state and its new blue governor.”
He then broadened his critique, labeling Sherrill’s stance as emblematic of the Democratic Party’s centrist wing and warning that such moderation enables the very policies activists oppose.
Anti‑ICE demonstrators continue to chant outside Delaney Hall, decrying alleged poor conditions, inadequate food, and mistreatment of detainees—a claim the Department of Homeland Security disputes.
Later in the stream, Piker accused Sherrill of actively advancing President Trump’s immigration policies, suggesting the governor was using her limited authority to side with the MAGA movement.
“The story isn’t the far‑left activists raging at ICE in New Jersey,” he said. “The real story is the horrifying conditions inside this facility and the governor acting as though she’s powerless, while wielding the power she has to work alongside the Trump administration.”
He condemned the presence of state troopers in anti‑riot gear on horseback, calling them “brutalizing New Jerseyans” and likening their tactics to an occupying force.
Piker also highlighted the mistreatment of journalists covering the protests, describing an incident where an Associated Press photographer was injured as “disgusting” and reminiscent of an oppressive regime.
Turning his fire toward the broader Democratic establishment, he argued that many lawmakers have participated in the immigration enforcement machinery, supporting legislation and funding that empower ICE.
“I want to change that system,” Piker asserted, urging the election of officials willing to “make a big fuss” and overturn the current paradigm.
During the broadcast, he voiced support for billionaire gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer and quoted revolutionary leader Mao Zedong, underscoring his alignment with radical progressive politics.
In recent months, Piker has traveled across the country canvassing for candidates endorsed by the Democratic Socialists of America, including a recent campaign stint in New Jersey for congressional hopeful Adam Hamamy.
