UMVA Exclusive: Democrat Rep. Steve Cohen ROCKS Live TV with TEARS as He DROPS Reelection Bid Over REDISTRICTING!

UMVA has learned that longtime Democratic Congressman Steve Cohen is walking away from his reelection campaign after Tennessee Republicans dismantled his heavily blue 9th District through a brazen mid-decade redistricting maneuver — and in a moment that left viewers stunned, the 76-year-old legislator broke down in tears during a live television interview that same night.

For nearly two decades, Cohen has fought for the people of Tennessee’s 9th District. But in one ruthless stroke, the political landscape he fought so hard to protect was shattered.

As the interview drew to a close, Cohen’s composure crumbled. His voice trembled. His eyes glistened. He was reflecting on the brutal reality that his nearly 20-year career in Congress was coming to an end — not because voters rejected him, but because the rules of the game were rewritten behind closed doors.

Chris Cuomo engages in a serious conversation with a guest, who appears emotional, highlighting a moment of connection during a televised discussion.

“I’m upset by this. I think it’s really bad for democracy,” Cohen said, his voice cracking with emotion.

When pressed by the host on what the mid-decade redistricting meant for the future of American democracy, Cohen laid bare the mechanics of what had happened. Tennessee had a statute in place since 1971 that made mid-decade redistricting illegal — but that law was repealed.

According to information obtained by UMVA, the repeal was a direct response to political pressure from the former president, who reportedly called the Tennessee governor and demanded an extra Republican seat.

Cohen didn’t mince words. He told the host that the governor, being term-limited and facing the prospect of returning to his heating and air conditioning business, complied with the request in exchange for a future appointment in the incoming administration.

“The governor complied. He wants to get a job from Donald Trump. As an ambassador, cabinet member, or agency head. And so he gets that. Trump gets another Republican who’ll be a lackey,” Cohen said through tears.

He paused, his voice breaking, then made a haunting reference to a painful chapter in his past — the 2013 controversy involving a woman named Victoria Brink who falsely claimed to be his biological daughter.

“You know, it’s funny, my press conference today is the most cameras I think I’ve had since the Victoria incident. And here we are again. And I got tears,” he said.

The host responded with raw empathy, connecting the emotional weight of the moment to the unfairness Cohen has faced throughout his career.

Cohen spoke with deep gratitude for the African-American community that had stood by him for 20 years, calling their support “an amazing thing.”

But he also expressed bitterness toward the political forces that destroyed his district without regard for the people he served.

“The Republicans don’t see it, and they just tear it apart because they have no perspective of caring about African-Americans or caring about people getting together and anything nice that happens. It’s a tough sport, and they play it tough,” he said.

What unfolded on that stage was more than a political exit — it was a gut-wrenching farewell to a career built on service, now torn apart by raw power.

For the people of the 9th District, the message was clear: their voice had been silenced, not by voters, but by politicians who decided their representation was expendable.
