The case surrounding the death of Charlie Kirk has taken a new turn with the unsealing of a crucial ballistics report. Conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the report centers on a bullet fragment recovered from the scene, and its potential link to the alleged murder weapon.
While investigators were able to definitively match a spent casing to the rifle believed to have been used in the shooting, a conclusive match to the bullet fragment itself proved elusive. The report details the examination of a “deformed/damaged” piece of the bullet jacket, alongside four lead fragments, revealing insufficient characteristics for a positive identification.
This finding emerged from a defense motion requesting a halt to further government testing until their own expert could analyze the evidence. Judge Tony Graf ultimately rejected the motion, stating the filing contained no sensitive or inflammatory information, making continued scrutiny appropriate.
According to the ATF report, an “inconclusive” result signifies a lack of sufficient quality or quantity of identifiable characteristics. Law enforcement sources suggest the bullet’s impact with bone caused it to shatter, a common occurrence that complicates ballistics analysis.
Despite the inconclusive fragment analysis, experts emphasize this doesn’t necessarily weaken the prosecution’s case. Retired FBI supervisory agent Jason Pack explained that ballistics are rarely the sole determinant in a homicide investigation, and the inconclusive finding applies only to the fragment, not the casing or the rifle itself.
The rifle, a Mauser, was identified as the source of the recovered cartridge case. Pack highlighted the defense’s actions as standard practice – protecting the client’s right to challenge evidence before potential alteration. He cautioned against drawing premature conclusions from a single pre-trial motion.
The alleged shooting occurred during a Turning Point USA event at Utah Valley University. Gruesome video captured the moment a single shot struck Kirk in the neck before a crowd of approximately 3,000 people, ultimately proving fatal.
Investigators discovered evidence on the rooftop suggesting a sniper position, including impressions in the gravel consistent with someone lying prone while firing. The rifle was later found concealed in a wooded area near the campus, wrapped in a blanket.
Prosecutors allege that text messages between the accused, Tyler Robinson, and his partner, Lance Twiggs, reveal a plan to retrieve the rifle following the incident. Robinson reportedly wrote of needing to “grab my rifle still” shortly after the shooting.
Twiggs is currently cooperating with investigators and has not been charged. Robinson is scheduled for a court hearing regarding a motion to exclude news cameras from future proceedings, and faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted of aggravated murder.
