The incident began on May 31 when a customer ordered from the drive-thru at a Wendy's in Union, South Carolina, but encountered an issue with her meal.
The customer requested a refund, and staff members took the food back. However, the employees then offered to remake the order, which the customer ultimately accepted before driving away.
It was not until the customer received a phone call from someone at the restaurant that she discovered the disturbing truth. The caller informed her that an employee had pulled her food from a trash can and spat on it.
Upon inspecting the meal, the woman realized that the "new" order was actually the same food from her initial order. She immediately contacted the police to report the incident.
The police investigation led to the arrest of three Wendy's employees. Aaliyah Shuntai Sanders, 23, Trinity Lashell Rice, 19, and Shadela Crystal Holley were all charged with tampering with a human drug product or food item.
The three suspects were arrested separately between June 16 and June 22. All three employees involved had been written up by the restaurant manager, who had spoken with the staff and verified the allegations.
The police took swift action in response to the allegations. The incident has raised concerns about food safety and the integrity of fast food restaurants.
The restaurant chain has declined to comment on the incident, but the incident has sparked outrage and calls for greater accountability in the food service industry.
